There are three wines of the Abruzzo region that are recognized by the DOC or “Denominazione di Origine Controllata”, which literally means Controlled Designation of Origin. They represent only 8% of Abruzzo’s wine production. Just because the DOC doesn’t approve doesn’t mean that you won’t! If you ever find yourself in the Abruzzo region, be sure to try one or more of the many varieties produced there.
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo: This wine is different from the wine from the town of Montepulciano in Siena. The Sienese use Sangiovese grapes while the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is produced using the Montepulciano grape. The d’Abruzzo wines are one of the most popular export wines.
Cerasuolo: Cerasuolo is produced using the Montepulciano grapes as well, resulting in a delicate rose.
Trebbiano d’Abruzze: Also known as Bombino Bianco, this is a white wine produced with mostly the Trebbiano grape. The best is thought to come from the Chieti province where the wine is usually 100% Trebbiano grapes.
Which is our favorite? It’s hard to pick as they are all fantastic! This is really up to each individual’s unique taste which makes trying out new wines so fun. We offer some Italian wines on our menu, if you don’t have a favorite yet…try one out the next time you dine in with us.
